Second Amendment Institute Files Supreme Court Amicus Brief

The Second Amendment Institute has filed an amicus brief before the Supreme Court of the United States in Viramontes v. Cook County, a case addressing whether the Second Amendment protects the right to possess AR-15 platform and similar semiautomatic rifles.

A Major Second Amendment Case Before the Supreme Court

Viramontes v. Cook County is now before the Supreme Court and presents a significant constitutional question involving restrictions on AR-15 platform and similar semiautomatic rifles.

On September 3, 2026, the Second Amendment Institute and fellow amici filed a brief with the Supreme Court in connection with the case. The filing places SAI's legal arguments before the Court as the Justices consider the constitutional questions presented.

Question Before the Court

Whether the Second and Fourteenth Amendments guarantee the right to possess AR-15 platform and similar semiautomatic rifles.

The Supreme Court has scheduled oral argument for December 2, 2026. The case is being considered alongside Grant v. Higgins, another case involving restrictions on semiautomatic rifles.
